Why Jiu-Jitsu is the Best Martial Art Self-Defense for Children?
Jiu-Jitsu is about self-defense and the best way to defend your self is to stop an attack from happening. Our program teaches students simple strategies and basic verbal techniques that are always the 1st step of conflict resolution. These strategies raise their awareness of dangerous situations and the dialogues help their social skills. Students at our academy will also learn how to use leverage to stop an attack and to control an attacker. If a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner is attacked and physical confrontation is unavoidable he/she will be able to subdue their opponents without the use of punching and kicking, eliminating the need to use excessive force in a real-life self-defense situation. Many parents have turned to Martial Arts like Tae Kwon Do and Karate or Kung Fu which are what is known as ‘striking’ sports. A striking sport is difficult to practice without suffering injuries. Also, to practice such sports teachers must restrict the practice to non-contact forms which diminishes their effectiveness to be used in a real life situation. Lastly if a smaller person strikes a larger attacker but does not disable them it could put them in an even worse situation.
Books, Articles, and even TV shows, have been produced in recent years about intimidation by kids against other kids in schools throughout the world what is commonly referred to as bullying. Japan, England and, of course, the U.S., have been highlighted. The image of some bully sitting on top of their child is the parent’s greatest fear and the child’s as well!
What sets Caique Jiu-Jitsu apart from other schools?
Our Youth Program has 4 different class groups, separated according to age and maturity level. This allows the kids to learn verbal and physical techniques that apply to physical attacks and verbal dialogs of their age group. It also allows us to teach them leadership by being the oldest in one class, then teach them to take on new challenges when we graduate them to the next class and they become the youngest in their new group. Here at our school your child or teen will learn from world renowned Professor Pedro Elias, the oldest son of Master Caique Elias. The techniques they will learn were developed by Grand Master Helio Gracie and Master Rickson Gracie and passed down to Master Caique as a way to defend against bigger and more athletic attackers.
Young Champions (5-7 Years Old) – The young champions program focuses on the most basic and simple self-defense techniques and basic verbal confrontation-avoidance techniques. Students are taught to follow commands within a specific time frame and to express them-selves verbally not physically. We have developed several “games” in which they must use the techniques they have learned. This allows the kids to learn in a fun way while developing their coordination and reflexes. Our instructors are trained to always keep the children motivated and at the same time disciplined. In order to move on to the Young Champions 2 class they must show enough self-discipline to: 1. Learn a move by seeing it 2.Respond within 5 seconds of a command 3.Use words not strikes for resolving conflicts 4. Master all moves in the curriculum. Once they have mastered these skills they will move on to the Young Champions Advanced program.
Young Champions 2 (6 -9 Years Old) – This program’s curriculum consists of games and conflict resolution exercises along with Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Students participate in in-class discussions about bullies, strangers, exercise and health. Students begin to learn submissions and to spar from specific positions. They will be ready to move on to the youth 1 class once they master the curriculum or turn 10 years old. Students who show extraordinary focus and determination are allowed to enter competitions.
Youth 1 (8-12 years old)– Bullying is most prevalent in this age group. We focus our program on basic self-defense techniques that will help our students defend themselves from any situation that may arise including confrontation-avoidance dialogues. We often have class discussions about bullies and what to do in specific situations. Students in this class will also learn techniques that will get them ready to compete if they choose to do so. In the Youth 1 and Youth 2 programs our students start to spar on a regular basis. After learning the moves, sparring is the most important part of their learning. Sparring works their reflexes in real time situations and is the closest thing to defending themselves against an attacker in real life. Children who maintain a steady training schedule are allowed to enter Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
Youth 2 – Teens (12-16 years old) – Students will learn the same curriculum as the adult’s Basics and Street Fight Simulation classes. This class focuses on kids entering high school. It gets them ready to defend themselves from verbal and physical confrontations should the need arise. We also talk about drugs, peer pressure, health and how to have control of your own actions. Kids are encouraged to enter competitions as that is a major part of the martial art.
We don’t only teach jiu-jitsu here. Through an array of different activities we teach kids important values to help them become good members of society.

Courage, Self Control, Respect, Discipline, while at the same time having fun! Through our program your child’s concentration, coordination and fitness level will also increase. What we offer is a martial arts program specifically designed for children ages 5 to 16. This program focuses on improving children’s listening and motor skills. These skills will help them enter society with more confidence and enthusiasm. There are eight major skills our instructors focus on when training children ages five to Fifteen, those skills are: focus, teamwork, control, balance, memory, discipline, fitness and coordination. In each class we cover at least one of these skills with a wide variety of activities that are fun and at the same time educational. All skills are taught in a safe and supervised environment.
Prof. Pedro Elias is the black belt head instructor of the children’s program. His skills with the young ones has earned 5 stars reviews from all of the children’s parents.
